Onyx, a banded form of Chalcedony, has long been prized for jewellery and decorative carvings, especially by the Romans. Its name comes from the Greek ‘onux’ (fingernail), inspired by a legend in which Cupid’s clipping of Venus’s nails was transformed into this enduring stone.
